GUNTER: More autonomy needed for Alberta, separation only if necessary

Deep thinkers such as Jack Mintz, one of the country’s most-respected economists, and Ted Morton, a leading political scientist and a former Alberta finance minister, among others, agreed that greater autonomy for Alberta was preferable. However, if circumstances in the country don’t change to accommodate some of Alberta’s legitimate concerns, it may become necessary for the province to leave.

I would say that’s about where I am along the independence continuum — greater autonomy is preferable to outright separation.

But I would add one caveat: I don’t hold out much hope of the Laurentian elites changing things to make Alberta happier.
